ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth field hockey team saw their season come to a close on Saturday, falling 6-2 to Russel Sage at NLPA Field. It was the Golden Flyers Cancer Awareness Game where former player Mya Maloof ('21 UG, '23 Gr) was honored and remembered. Maloof, who played field hockey form Nazareth from 2018-21, passed away peacefully in her home on August 11, 2023 from cancer, surrounded by her loving family.
Mya's family was in attendance Saturday's game as the field hockey program and Nazareth University honored and remembered Mya's legacy. A pregame ceremony took place where the very jersey Mya played in for four seasons was presented to her family. In addition, a #14 flag was added to the flagpole to honor Mya. It will be fly at all field hockey games moving forward.
After the loss, the Golden Flyers finish the season 1-14 overall and 1-6 in Empire 8 play. Sage moves to 6-9 and 3-4, respectively.
The Golden Flyers got off to a great start, as
Audra Mieczkowski scored her team leading seventh goal of the season just 1:04 into the contest from
Lydia Coombs. Mieczkowski finishes the season as the top point scorer with 16 points on seven goals and two assists.
Alyssa Fitzgerald scored one of her four goals in the game for Sage at 9:51 of the first quarter. It was 2-1 at the half.
The Gators added two goals in both the third and fourth quarters, before
Avery Tanton scored Nazareth's other goal. The goal came off a penalty corner with the assist going to
Sam Helmer.
Morgan Russo played the first three quarters, allowing four goals and making 11 saves.
Mackenzie Halliday and
Lauren Bachner split the fourth quarter. Bachner surrendered two goals and made one save.
