Strong Defense Secures Empire 8 Top Seed

ALFRED, NY – Junior Annika Monfort made nine saves and the Nazareth University Women's Soccer team defense turned in another shutout effort as the Golden Flyers finished the regular season with a 2-0 win at Alfred.

The win secures the top seed in the Empire 8 Tournament for Nazareth (6-4-6 overall, 5-0-3 Empire 8). The Golden Flyers finished the conference schedule undefeated and only allowed one goal all season. The shutout streak for Monfort and the defense extended to nearly 670 minutes with the shutout Wednesday.

Nazareth took an early lead as junior Haley Glassman scored 2:12 into the contest.

Sophomore Alice O'Connor made it a 2-0 lead nine minutes later as she converted a pass from senior Alexandra Skoda.

The Nazareth defense was dominant the entire game and kept the Saxons (4-5-6 overall, 2-1-5 Empire 8) off the board in the second half despite allowing 11 shots and five corner kicks.

The best chance for Alfred came late in the game with an offensive player stealing a clearing pass and taking a one-on-one shot at Monfort but the junior made a diving save to preserve the shutout.

Nazareth earns a first-round bye in the Empire 8 Tournament and will play the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 seed match Wednesday at Golden Flyer Stadium.
