Women's Soccer and Fisher Battle to a Scoreless Draw

ROCHESTER, NY – In a battle of East Avenue rivals, the Nazareth women's soccer team and St. John Fisher played to a scoreless draw on Wednesday at Golden Flyer Stadium. The tie keeps Nazareth in control of its own destiny in league play. Junior goalkeeper Annika Monfort was stellar all day for the hosts, finishing with seven saves for her fourth shutout of the season.

Nazareth is now 4-3-5 overall and 3-0-2 in Empire 8 play, while Fisher drops to 5-3-4 and 2-0-3, respectively. The Golden Flyers are currently tied with Utica in league play at 3-0-2 with the two squads facing off on Saturday at Golden Flyer Stadium at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. Nazareth and Utica met last year in the Empire 8 Championship, a 1-0 victory at Golden Flyer Stadium.

The biggest play of the opening half came in the 17th minute off a Cardinals corner kick.  Monfort stopped a point-blank opportunity from the six-yard box to keep the score 0-0.

The Cardinals had a 9-6 edge in shots in the first half but Nazareth finished with a 16-15 edge for the game.

Freshman Camryn Schiavitti had a great opportunity in close early in the second half off a pass from Tatum Overton but had it turned aside.

The Golden Flyers had another strong opportunity in the 62nd minute with Overtun taking a shot that was initially saved and Shannon Sgombick was able to nearly tap in before colliding with a Fisher defender.

Monfort saved the day again for the Golden Flyers in the 73rd minute as a giveaway allowed Fisher an open blast from outside the 18-yard box that the junior pushed out of bounds for a corner.
