ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Freshman
Makaelynn Neivel scored directly off a corner kick in the 72
nd minute to help Nazareth earn a 1-1 draw on Friday against Kenyon College in the Golden Flyers season opener.
Nazareth and Denison both move to 0-0-1 on the year after the draw.
After controlling the better of play in the second half, Nazareth was finally able to break through to even the score at the 71:14 mark. Neivel, playing in her first collegiate game, scored off a right-footed corner that started straight and bent toward the far post, before clipping the goalkeepers hand and finding the back of the net.
Nazareth held an 11-9 advantage in shots for the game.
Kenyon didn't register much of an attack in the first half but scored on their third shot in the 36
th minute. Julia Igoe took a long pass from midfield and popped it over
Annika Monfort's outstretched hand.
Nazareth nearly evened the score on their best chance of the half as junior
Alexandra Skoda banged one off the crossbar less than :45 seconds later.
Monfort made four saves for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth will be back on the pitch on Saturday, hosting Denison at 2 p.m. at Golden Flyer Stadium.
