Women’s Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep at Alvernia

READING, PA – Madison Nichols scored twice as the Nazareth College Women's Hockey team scored in each period to post a 6-1 victory Saturday in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game at Alvernia.

The Golden Flyers (22-1-0 overall, 18-0-0 UCHC) scored late in the first period to take the initial lead as senior Abbey Luth won a faceoff in the Alvernia (9-12-1, 7-9-1 UCHC) zone and pulled the puck directly back to junior Ally Watrous who fired a shot into the upper corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

Just 3:25 into the second period, Nichols scored the first of two goals on the day as she tapped in a rebound after sophomore Julia Holmes had her shot from the point saved.

Midway through the second period, Nazareth broke the game open as junior Makenna Wiljanen scored off a rebound in front of the net and less than a minute later, junior Ali Fujiyoshi scored her first career goal with a shot from the point that found its way over the goalie's glove for the 4-0 Nazareth lead.

Two minutes later, the Wolves snapped the shutout with their only goal of the game as the second period ended with the Golden Flyers leading 4-1.

In the third period, Nichols extended the lead as she followed fellow senior Hailey Redders in on a breakaway and after the goalie made the initial stop, Nichols collected the rebound and snapped a shot into the back of the goal for the 5-1 edge.

Senior Kyla Thompson capped the scoring on another scramble in front of the Alvernia goal as senior Keeley Rose and Luth were credited with assists on the play.

Nazareth will face Utica in the final regular season games with a road series Friday (2:30 p.m.) and Saturday (1:30 p.m.) at the War Memorial Arena in Utica.
