KEUKA PARK, NY – Freshman Avery Tanton scored for the Nazareth Field Hockey team with nine minutes left in regulation to tie the game at 3-3 but Keuka scored the game-winner 2:41 into overtime to claim a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon in the final regular season game for the Golden Flyers.
The loss eliminates Nazareth (4-15 overall, 4-5 Empire 8) from the Empire 8 Tournament as Keuka (6-12, 4-5 Empire 8) earns the No. 6 seed due to tie-breaker criteria.
The Wolves opened the scoring 4:38 into the game with a quick shot off a rebounded save but Nazareth answered back with the tying goal less than four minutes later as senior Bailey Selman notched her first goal of the season. Selman took the pass from fellow senior Caroline Desautels and redirected the ball into the back of the net.
Less than two minutes later, senior Grace Wasileski scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season with an assist by Selman to give Nazareth the lead at 2-1 with five minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
Keuka scored early in the second quarter to knot the game at 2-2.
Late in the third quarter, the Wolves regained the lead with a goal with 1:23 remaining in the period.
Tanton tied the score in the fourth with a shot off a penalty corner as Desautels sent a ball to the edge of the circle to freshman Audra Mieczkowski who fired a shot toward the goal where Tanton picked up the loose ball and scored for the 3-3 tie.
Nazareth had a chance early in overtime with a penalty corner but a defensive save kept the score tied.
Keuka had a long breakaway run but a contact with the leg call gave possession back to Nazareth. The Wolves regained possession and pushed the ball into the circle for a penalty corner that resulted in the winning goal.
