Box Score ELMIRA, NY – Sophomore Makenna scored late in the second period for the Nazareth College Women's Hockey team to trim the lead to 3-1 but the Golden Flyers could not battle back and dropped a 5-1 decision to Elmira College in the championship game of the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Tournament Tuesday night in Elmira.
Elmira (13-1) took a 1-0 lead with a goal in the closing seconds of the first period after outshooting Nazareth (8-2) 11-5 in the first 20 minutes of action.
The Soaring Eagles took a 2-0 lead six minutes into the second period and added a third goal with just 30 seconds left in the stanza and looked to take a 3-0 lead into the second intermission.
Nazareth won the ensuing face off and moved into the offensive zone quickly and Wiljanen finished a play with assists from junior Madson Nichols and freshman Kate Cascio to trim the lead to 3-1 and give a little momentum to the Golden Flyers heading into the period break.
An Elmira goal with under seven minutes to play looked the seal the victory but Nazareth pulled the goalie with three minutes to play in the period to apply pressure with the extra attacker. The pressure was increased after a late penalty to the Soaring Eagles.
Elmira intercepted a pass in the defensive zone and flipped a shot the length of the ice for the empty net short-handed goal and the final margin of victory.
Junior Nikolle Van Strallen, who scored a pair of goals in the semifinal win over Chatham Saturday was named to the All-Tournament team for the Golden Flyers.
