ALFRED, NY – The Nazareth College Softball team offense struggled with just five hits in each game Tuesday as Alfred University won 9-1 and 10-0 in an Empire 8 doubleheader on Harrington Field.
Alfred (18-5, 9-3 Empire 8) scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings of the opener to take a 9-0 lead and Nazareth (2-12, 2-10 E8) scored its only run with a home run by junior Sarah Simmons in the fourth inning.
Senior Janelle Walters provided one of the few bright spots as she went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Golden Flyers and freshman Megan Pum was 1-for-2.
In game two, Alfred scored all the runs it needed in the first inning as the Saxons scored 10 times in the opening frame and cruised to the 10-0 win. Five different players all had one hit each for Nazareth in the second contest as Simmons and Walters each had hits along with junior Aubrin Smith, senior Katherine Ruoff and sophomore Lily Sullivan also collecting hits.
The Golden Flyers will have a chance for revenge Friday when Alfred travels to Nazareth for the second half of the home-and-home series with games starting at 3 p.m. on Flyer Field.
