Nazareth blanks Chatham for third straight win, 6-0

Golden Flyers (3-1 overall) host Cougars Saturday at 7 p.m.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Visiting Nazareth recorded its third straight shutout victory in women's hockey Friday as the Golden Flyers put forth a dominating effort in a 6-0 victory over Chatham at the Pittsburgh Ice Arena.

Abbey Luth scored a pair of goals and Elie Fallieras and Makenna Wiljanen each had a goal and an assist to lead the Golden Flyers. Delaney Carle contributed three assists as Nazareth improved to 3-1 both overall and in United Collegiate Hockey Conference games. Chatham dropped to 3-2 and 3-2. The teams meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.

Nazareth also had two shutout wins last weekend against Utica as the Golden Flyers continue to inch their way up the UCHC standings. Against Chatham, the Golden Flyers controlled the action with a 40-15 advantage in shots on goal with two goals coming on the power play and one short-handed.

Two goals came in the first period as sophomore Ally Watrous, a transfer from Quinnipiac, scored her first collegiate goal at 8:28. About six minutes later, Nazareth benefited on the power play as Luth netted her first goal of the game with Carle generating the assist.

Nazareth pulled away with three more goals in the second period, including another power play tally by Luth, who scored her third goal of the season off assists from Carle and Hailey Redders. That goal was sandwiched between Wiljanen's third goal of the season and the first Nazareth goal by Fallieras, a junior transfer from UMass-Boston.

In the third period, Chatham had an opportunity when Nazareth's Ali Fujiyoshi was whistled for a minor penalty at 5:10. Instead, Nazareth scored its sixth goal of the game as freshman Julia Holmes delivered her first career goal off an assist from Wiljanen.
Nazareth had more opportunities to expand its lead in the third period but didn't score on four power play chances. Junior Adrianna Brehm played all 60 minutes in goal for Nazareth and had 15 saves to secure her second shutout of the season and 12th of her career. Brehm's effort was aided by the Golden Flyers' penalty killing unit, which stymied five chances by the Cougars, who got 34 saves from goaltender Katy Reed.
