ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore
McKayla Hughes scored a pair of goals and senior
Kristen Prohaska contributed one goal and one assist Wednesday as Nazareth recorded its second women's soccer win over Houghton in a week, 4-0, at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Nazareth improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Empire 8 Conference play. Houghton is 0-3 overall and 0-2 in E8 games. The Golden Flyers also defeated Houghton, 4-0, on March 17 in a non-conference game. The Golden Flyers have outscored their four opponents 21-1 this spring.
The Golden Flyers dominated the action by unleashing 15 first-half shots, but they were unable to score until the 36th minute when Prohaska delivered her team-leading fifth goal of the season following a left-footed shot off an assist from
Sydney Moss.
In the second half, Nazareth scored in the 52nd minute as Hughes one-touched a shot into the goal after a service into the box by freshman
Shayla Scully, who gained credit for her first collegiate point.
Exactly five minutes later, Prohaska gained an advantage along the end line and was able to center a pass in front of the goal, where
Alexandra Skoda converted for her third goal of the season.
Hughes closed out the scoring with her second goal in the 88th minute as she settled a pass from
Madison Knowles and beat Highlanders' goalkeeper Megan Merrifield with a low shot.
Nazareth finished with a 23-4 advantage in shots. Junior Gabielle Pighetti made her fourth straight start in goal and was called upon to make just one second-half save to gain credit for her third shutout.
Nazareth is home again Saturday for an Empire 8 Conference game against Russell Sage at 3 p.m.
