Men’s Soccer Starts Season with a 3-0 Win at Alfred

ALFRED, NY – Freshman Cooper LaValley scored twice and sophomore Dylan Rippe added a goal and an assist to lead the Nazareth College Men's Soccer team to a season-opening 3-0 victory Sunday at Alfred.

Rippe was involved in the first two goals of the game as he scored off a through pass from senior Jake Adams a little more than 10 minutes into the game and then set up LaValley with a nice through pass as the freshman scored his first career goal for the Golden Flyers (1-0).

Nazareth had a chance to extend the lead late in the first half with a diving header by junior Dante Walters but the shot went just wide of the goal.

At halftime, Nazareth held a 4-1 shots advantage and a 6-0 lead in corner kicks.

In the second half, Adams lined up for a direct kick from just outside the 18-yard box and sent a hard shot off the edge of the five-player wall that went wide of the goal.

Alfred had its best scoring chance on an in-direct kick from inside the 18-yard box that was touched back and a hard shot deflected off the post to keep the Saxons (0-2).

With 24:29 left to play, Nazareth capped the scoring as LaValley picked up his second goal of the game. A pass sent just outside the top of the box by senior Adrian Padilla led to a foot race between an Alfred defender, the Alfred goalie and LaValley. The Nazareth freshman won the race and sent a shot into the open goal for the 3-0 lead.

For the game, the shots were 23-8 in favor of Nazareth and the Golden Flyers held a 10-1 edge in shots on goal.

The next game for Nazareth is Thursday with a 7 p.m. game at Russell Sage.
