Carle and Wiljanen each Score as Nazareth Wins Home Opener

ROCHESTER, NY – Junior Delaney Carle scored in the first period and sophomore Makenna Wiljanen added a goal in the third period as the Nazareth College Women's Hockey team rebounded from a season-opening loss on the road to win a 2-0 victory over Utica College in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game Friday night at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.

Less than a minute after an early penalty against Utica (3-2-0, 2-1-0 UCHC), Carle pushed in a rebound in front of the Pioneer goal for the early Nazareth (1-1-0, 1-1-0 UCHC) lead on the power play goal.

The Golden Flyers had several good chances later in the first period as Nazareth held a convincing 20-6 lead in shots after 20 minutes of play.

In the second period, each team had multiple power play opportunities but the score remained 1-0 despite another shots advantage (16-7) Nazareth.

The Golden Flyers controlled the bulk of play in the third period as well as Wiljanen scored to extend the lead. Freshman Julia Holmes circled around the offensive zone before firing a shot wide of the goal and off the boards behind the net. Wiljanen picked up the loose puck and moved around to the right of the goal before netting a shot past the Utica goalie for the 2-0 Nazareth lead.

Junior Adrianna Brehm finished with 19 saves for her first win of the season and 29th of her career. The shutout was the 11th in her career.

The same two teams with play at 7 p.m. Saturday in Utica.
