ALFRED STATION, NY – A goal in the first two minutes of the second half was the only goal of the game as Alfred downed the Nazareth College Women's Soccer team Saturday night in the regular season finale.
The loss snapped a five-game win streak for the Golden Flyers (8-6-3 overall, 7-1 E8) but the loss did not have an effect on the final Empire 8 standings for Nazareth as the Golden Flyers had clinched the top spot prior to the final game. The win for Alfred launched the Saxons to the No. 2 position. Nazareth is set to face the winner of the matchup between No. 4 seed Hartwick against No. 5 seed Utica. The other semifinal features Alfred facing No. 3 seed St. Fisher.
Against Alfred (10-4-4, 5-1-2 E8), the teams played a close first half as Nazareth fired four shots and Alfred managed three but neither team could score in the first 45 minutes.
Early in the second half, Alfred broke free for a goal by Alyssa Smith on the first of its four shots in the half to take the lead.
Nazareth threatened late in the half but could not produce a good scoring chance in its effort to tie the game.
Freshman Annika Monfort made three saves in the Nazareth goal.
Nazareth will play it's semifinal match Thursday at Golden Flyer Stadium.
