Golden Flyers (18-4-3 overall) close out regular season schedule

Updated stats
GENEVA, N.Y. -- Sophomore Abbey Luth had a goal and two assists against her former team Sunday as Nazareth closed out its regular-season schedule in women's hockey with a 4-1 victory at William Smith.

It was the Golden Flyers' second win of the season over the Herons, who had a 10-game winning streak snapped. At 18-4-3 overall and 12-2-2 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference games, Nazareth clinched the second seed for the first round of next weekend's conference playoffs. William Smith is 17-8 overall and 13-3 in UCHC games. The teams are tied for second place with 26 points, but Nazareth holds the tiebreaker with two wins over the Herons this season. According to the UCHC website, Nazareth will host the Herons again Saturday in a first-round playoff matchup at the Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex at 2 p.m. Elmira knocked off Utica Sunday and gained the top seed in the UCHC North and will play the Pioneers again in a first-round game.

In Sunday's game, Nazareth built a 2-0 early in the second period on goals by Delaney Carle and Nikolle Van Stralen. After William Smith scored, Nazareth got a goal from Madison Nichols midway through the second period and another by Luth in the third period to create the three-goal margin. The Herons pulled their goaltender for the final three minutes of the third period in favor of an extra skater, but they were unable to capitalize.

Carle's goal was her first of the season and came on the power play at 6:24 with assists from Luth and Hailey Redders.

Van Strahlen's 10th goal of the season made the score 2-0 in the second period with assists from Madison Schroeder and Gabriella DeMeo. The Herons scored their goal just 24 seconds later, but Nazareth regained their two-goal lead at 9:03 of the second when Nichols knocked in a rebound off a shot by Luth.

Luth added her 15th goal of the season at 14:29 of the third to erase any Heron comeback hopes with Nichols and Stephanie Kubis gaining assists.

Nazareth had a 40-23 edge in shots and sophomore goaltender Adrianna Brehm played all 60 minutes to gain her 12th win of the season. Luth leads the Golden Flyers in scoring with 36 points on 15 goals and a team-best 21 assists after playing for the Herons last season.
