ROCHESTER, NY –Sophomore Madison Nichols knocked in a rebound off a shot by classmate Delaney Carle with 8:58 left in the third period as the Nazareth College women's hockey team salvaged a 3-3 tie with Manhattanville Friday afternoon in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
Nazareth (12-2-2 overall, 6-1-1 UCHC) took an early lead as Maria DiCresce scored in the first period on a nice play up the boards with assists from sophomore Stephanie Kubis and freshman Rae Rice 3:22 into the game.
The Golden Flyers added to the lead in the second period as sophomore Gabriella DeMeo scored from the point after receiving a pass from fellow sophomore Hailey Redders as Nazareth took a 2-0 lead less than eight minutes into the second period.
Manhattanville (9-5-3, 7-0-1) rallied with a pair of goals in a span of less than four minutes later in the second period to tie the game. The second goal came midway through the fifth power play opportunity of the game for the Valiants and tied the score with 3:58 left in the period.
Early in the third period, Manhattanville took the lead with a goal at the 4:47 mark of the period but Nazareth battled back with the tying goal by Nichols six minutes later.
The goal by Nichols was set up after Redders won control of the puck in the corner and sent a pass out to Carle who skated in from the blue line and sent a low shot toward the far corner of the goal. The save was made but Nichols was on the doorstep to collect the rebound and put the puck into the back of the net to tie the score.
Neither team was able to score the remainder of the period and throughout the five minute overtime session as the teams settled for the 3-3 tie.
The Golden Flyers are back in action Saturday with a 1 p.m. UCHC game against Neumann at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
