Box Score PLYMOUTH, NH – Sophomore Abbey Luth scored the game-winning goal for the Nazareth College women's hockey team with 10 seconds left Friday as the Golden Flyers battled back after building an early lead to score the non-conference road win over Plymouth State.
Luth took a pass from freshman Makenna Wiljanen with just 10 seconds remaining in the third period and ended the game as she finally put a shot past Plymouth State (3-10-0) goalie Becca Bridge who had 50 saves on the night.
Nazareth (10-2-1) got off to a good start and took a 1-0 lead 6:12 into the contest when sophomore captain Keeley Rose intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and caught Plymouth State in transition as she sent a pass forward to freshman Caroline Rae who sent a wrist shot from the top of the face-off circle past the Panthers goalie.
The Golden Flyers took a 2-0 lead late in the period after two unsuccessful powerplay opportunities. Freshman Rae Rice won control of the puck in the offensive zone in the corner to the right of the goalie and circled around to the top of the slot before firing a wrist shot that deflected off the cross bar and into the net with 53 seconds left in the opening period.
Nazareth is 8-0-1 when scoring the first goal of the game and 5-0 when leading after one period of action.
Plymouth State narrowed the gap in the second period with the first power play goal allowed by Nazareth this season as the Panthers moved to within a goal at 2-1. The Golden Flyers had killed off each of the first 40 power play attempts of the season.
In the third period, Plymouth State scored another power play goal to tie the score at 2-2 four minutes into the period.
Nazareth applied intense offensive pressure for the rest of the period but could not regain the lead before the end of regulation.
The Golden Flyers continue the stretch of road game with two conference games next weekend at Chatham and Lebanon Valley.
