FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Host Fredonia built a two-goal advantage early in the second half Tuesday and the Blue Devils went on to hand Nazareth its first men's soccer defeat of the 2019 season, winning 2-1 over the Golden Flyers.

Off to their best start since 2012, the Golden Flyers dropped to 4-1 overall, while Fredonia improved to 2-1-2 overall. It was an evenly played, but physical game that included 27 player fouls and five yellow cards. Each team had seven shots.

The game was scoreless until the home team broke through in the 37th minute on a goal by Parker Ange. Then, the teams had barely broken a sweat early in the second half when the Blue Devils converted again. Cole Teelin scored off an assist from Matt Cullen just 43 seconds into the half to build a lead from which Nazareth couldn't recover.

Nazareth had chances, but finally scored after sophomore Sam Smyth was dragged down in the penalty area as he was working his way toward the goal. Junior Jake Adams scored on the subsequent penalty kick for his second goal of the season with just over 16 minutes left. The Golden Flyers were unable to generate a serious scoring threat thereafter as Fredonia held on.

Brian Wilkin played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves. The Golden Flyers host Ithaca Saturday in another non-league game at 3 p.m.
