ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Janelle Walters finished the day 5-for-7 with three runs scored and two runs batted in as the Nazareth College softball team scored a pair of victories over Elmira College Wednesday with a 3-0 win in the opener and a 5-4 victory in the nightcap in the Empire 8 doubleheader on Flyers Field.
In addition to Walters on offense for the Golden Flyers (13-17 overall, 5-5 E8), senior Marissa Tortora added to her career accolades with four hits including two doubles which tied her for the career lead in doubles with 31.
Elmira (9-11, 3-7) sent the minimum number of batters to the plate in the opener as Nazareth sophomore Gabriella Corasaniti allowed just two hits and both base runners were eliminated with double plays. Corasaniti struck out three batters and faced the minimum 21 batters in the shutout victory.
The Golden Flyers scored all their runs in the first two innings with a pair of runs in the first and one more in the second.
In the first, Walters walked to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Allison Smith. Tortora walked to put two runners on and with one out, sisters Kristen Simmons and Sarah Simmons had back-to-back run-scoring singles to give Nazareth the early lead.
In the second inning, Walters singled with two outs and came around to score on an Allison Smith single to give the Golden Flyers the 3-0 lead.
Walters, Smith, Tortora and Kristen Simmons all had two hits each for Nazareth.
In the second game, the Golden Flyers took the early lead again with two runs in the second inning.
Senior Madison Joseph led off the inning with a hard single up the middle, moved to second on a ground out and took third with a Sarah Simmons single.
Simmons stole second and Joseph stole home for the first run of the game and then with two outs and the bases loaded, Walters delivered a single down the left field line to score Simmons for the 2-0 lead.
Elmira answered with three runs in the top of the third with a pair of singles and a three-run home run.
Nazareth tied the game in the fourth inning as Walters singled again to score pinch runner senior Delaney St. George and even the score at 3-3.
Junior Kylie Smith pitched her way out of trouble in the fifth and Nazareth took the lead in the bottom of the inning as Kristen and Sarah Simmons hit back-to-back doubles for a run and the 4-3 lead.
The Golden Flyers added an important run in the fifth as Walters singled and scored on Tortora's second double of the game. The double was her 31st career double and tied the school record of 31 set by Maureen Rogers '16.
The Soaring Eagles added one run in the seventh inning but Corasaniti earned the save with a strike out to end the game.
Walters was 3-for-4 with a run and two runs batted in while Tortora and Sarah Simmons each added a pair of hits for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers return to action Saturday with the final regular season home games as Nazareth hosts Stevens for a 1 p.m. Empire 8 doubleheader. Between games of the twinbill, seniors Tortora, Joseph and St. George will be honored for Senior Day.
