NAPLES, FL – Sophomore Katherine Ruoff finished the day with four hits including a 3-for-4 game against Curry but the Nazareth College softball team dropped a pair of games Sunday losing the opener, 9-1 to Kenyon and then falling 9-6 to Curry in the first two games of the annual spring training trip to Florida.
Nazareth (0-2) took an early lead against Kenyon (9-2) with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Janelle Walters opened the bottom of the inning with an infield single and moved to second as freshman Aubrin Smith drew a walk. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and then senior Marissa Tortora lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to push across the first run of the game.
Kenyon answered with a pair of runs in the third and added on four more in the fourth. After three more runs in the fifth, Kenyon completed the eight-run rule victory with a double play to end the bottom of the fifth.
Ruoff was 1-for-1 with a walk in the loss.
In game two, Nazareth fell into an early hole as Curry (2-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a big first inning.
Ruoff started the Nazareth scoring with a leadoff single in the top of the second inning. With one out, freshman Allison Smith reach on an error and Walters singled to score Ruoff to trim the lead.
Curry tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend the lead to 8-1.
The Golden Flyers rallied in the third inning for three runs on a three-run home run by freshman Sarah Simmons. Madison Joseph and Kristen Simmons each singled to start the inning before Sarah Simmons lifted a home run to left center.
Ruoff doubled but was stranded on second as the inning ended with only two outs as the umpires lost track of the outs in the inning.
Curry took a 9-4 lead in the fifth and Nazareth added two runs in a seventh-inning rally before the Colonels ended the game.
In the seventh, Ruoff singled for her third hit of the game while Sarah Simmons and junior Kylie Smith also singled for Nazareth in the inning. The Golden Flyers scored both runs on errors.
Walters, Marissa Drees, Sarah Simmons, and Kylie Smith all had two hits each as Nazareth finished with 14 hits in the contest.
The Golden Flyers continue the spring training trip with a pair of games Monday facing Wilmington (OH) and Martin Luther (MN) College at 9 and 11 a.m. respectively in Naples.
