AMHERST, Mass. -- Playing its second tough non-conference game in less than 24 hours, Nazareth women's hockey team closed out its second-semester schedule by battling to a 1-1 draw Sunday at Amherst.
After defeating Castleton 2-1 at home Saturday, Nazareth bussed to Amherst for a 1 o'clock Sunday face-off against the Mammoths. The Golden Flyers, also receiving votes in the latest national rankings issued by uscho.com, had their record adjusted to 9-1-1 while extending their unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1). Amherst, competitors in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, is 2-2-2 overall. Nazareth now is off until Jan. 7.
Sunday's game was closely contested with the Golden Flyers ending up with a modest 32-29 edge in shots on goal. Nazareth had 12 shots in the first period and nine more in the second, but neither team could score until less than two minutes remaining in the second period.
Cristina Darby made a rush up the left-wing side and
Abbey Luth ended up with the puck in the corner. Her centering pass deflected out to
Keeley Rose in the right circle. Rose one-timed a shot past Amherst goaltender Caitlin Walker to break the scoreless deadlock for her fifth goal of the season. Luth and Darby were credited with assists.
It took the home team just 55 seconds into the third period to tie the score. Carley Daly was able to knock a rebound past Nazareth goalie
Adrianna Brehm, who finished the game with 28 saves.
The score remained tied and the teams played a five-minute overtime with neither team able to generate any significant scoring chances.
The cleanly played game included just three minor penalties -- one against Nazareth, two against Amherst -- and neither team was able to take advantage. The Golden Flyers are a perfect 36-for-36 in killing penalties through the first 11 games.
