ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Jennifer Hilts continued her record-breaking season with one of the biggest goals in school history as the Nazareth College field hockey team moved past top-seeded St. John Fisher with a 2-1 double overtime victory Friday night in the semifinal round of the Empire 8 Tournament at Growney Stadium.
The Golden Flyers (9-11) will play Hartwick at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John Fisher for the conference championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
For Nazareth, it is the third appearance in the Empire 8 title game with the most recent coming in 2011. The Golden Flyers won the conference championship in 2007 with a 2-1 victory over Washington and Jefferson. The Presidents won a 2-1 game in 2011. Hartwick has never been in the championship game.
On Friday, St. John Fisher (15-4) opened the scoring in the third quarter after a scramble for the loose ball in front of the Nazareth goal.
The equalizer for Nazareth came with 3:48 left in regulation play as junior Emilee Rosenberg, who had been inserted into the game just minutes earlier, scored her fifth goal of the season as she slid a shot under the Cardinals goalie.
The game remained tied for the rest of the fourth quarter and the teams headed to the first of two 10-minute overtime periods. Hilts had the lone shot for either team in the period but it was kicked aside by Fisher goalie Kelly Bergamo.
In the second 7 vs. 7 overtime period, the Cardinals applied early pressure with three good scoring chances. Sophomore goalie Amanda Chuttey made one save and two other shots were wide of the goal.
With less than three minutes left, the Nazareth defense was able to wear down the St. John Fisher defense with three straight penalty corners before freshman Caroline Desautels sent a pass across the mouth of the goal to the stick of Hilts who redirected the ball under the sliding goalie and into the back of the goal for the winning goal.
Chuttey finished with 10 saves in the Nazareth goal.
