ROCHESTER, N.Y. --
Abbey Luth scored twice and added an assist for host Nazareth Friday as the Golden Flyers recorded perhaps their biggest women's hockey victory to date with a 3-1 win over third-ranked Elmira.
The victory, recorded at the Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex, boosted Nazareth's overall record to 7-1, including a 3-1 mark in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference. Elmira, ranked third by uscho.com, is 3-1 both overall and in league play.
Elmira entered this weekend's action with some gaudy credentials, including 15 NCAA Tournament appearances and three national titles. The Soaring Eagles had not allowed a goal through their first three games while scoring 25 times themselves.
"It was a complete team win and it took every player we had out there to beat a team with the talent and work ethic of Elmira," said Nazareth Coach
Chris Baudo. "We couldn't be more proud of our players and it's 100 percent about the players and their willingness to commit to each other."
Elmira had multiple scoring chance in the first period, thanks to four Nazareth penalties that resulted in 12 shots on Nazareth goaltender
Adrianna Brehm. The second period brought four power play opportunities for the Golden Flyers, who finally cashed in at 7:12 with three seconds remaining on a tripping penalty to Elmira's Jenny Heath. Luth took a centering pass from
Kyla Thompson and stuffed a shot underneath the pads of Elmira goaltender Stephanie Martin for a 1-0 Nazareth lead.
Ali Fujiyoshi also was credited with an assist.
Elmira tied the score three minutes later when Eliza Beaudin tipped in a shot from the point by Amanda Zenstein at 10:24.
The go-ahead goal came at 8:44 of the third period as freshman
Celena Rea took advantage of an Elmira defensive giveaway by burying a shot in front of the goal for her fourth tally of the season. Luth was credited with an assist. The insurance goal came at 14:53 as Luth stole the puck near the red line, skated up the right wing and wristed a shot past Martin for her second goal of the game and sixth of the season.
Elmira pulled Martin for the final 1:36 of play in favor of an extra skater, but the Soaring Eagles were unable to generate any significant scoring chances as Brehm stayed steady in goal by finishing with 31 saves.
Nazareth finished with a 34-32 edge in shots on goal with Elmira's Martin responsible for 31 saves. The teams meet again Feb. 22 at Elmira.
The Golden Flyers are home again Saturday for another UCHC game against William Smith at 1 p.m.
