ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior
Jake Adams scored a pair of goals -- his team-leading 10th and 11th of the season -- Saturday as host Nazareth closed out its regular-season schedule with a 2-0 victory over Elmira on Senior Day at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Already the top seed for this week's Empire 8 Conference Tournament, the Golden Flyers ran their unbeaten streak to 11 games (8-0-3) as they improved to 12-2-3 overall and 5-0-1 in the E8. The Golden Flyers will host the Soaring Eagles (9-6-3 overall, 2-2-2 E8) again in a first-round game Wednesday at 1 p.m. The E8 Championship game is Saturday.
Adams scored once in each half. In just the second minute of action, Elmira was whistled for a hand ball from about 20 yards from the goal. Adams stepped up for the free kick and drilled a shot into the upper right corner of the goal for a 1-0 Nazareth lead.
The rest of the half was evenly played with Nazareth holding an 8-4 edge in shots, while Elmira was able to generate three corner kicks.
The second half was more of the same and the score remained unchanged until the 68th minute when Nazareth's
Zein Mohamed was dragged down in the penalty area. Adams stepped up and converted the resulting penalty kick for the second goal of the game. It was Adams' third penalty kick goal this season.
Senior goalkeeper
Brian Wilkin made seven saves to pick up his fifth shutout of the season and 21st of his career.
Wilkin was one of three Nazareth seniors honored prior to the game for competing in their final regular-season home game.
Francesco Viavattene and
Dereck France, both four-year players, also were recognized.
