HOUGHTON, NY – Freshmen Sarah Merriwether and McKayla Hughes scored goals in a span of five minutes midway through the second half to lead the Nazareth College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Houghton College in Empire 8 action Saturday on Burke Field.
After a scoreless first half, that Nazareth (6-3-1 overall, 2-0-1 E8) dominated with a 9-1 edge in shots and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks, the Golden Flyers finally put a shot into the back of the net as Merriwether took a pass from sophomore Mia Longo for the 1-0 lead.
Exactly five minutes later, Hughes scored her third goal of the season with an assist from senior Noelle Colilli to extend the lead.
Nazareth held a 9-2 shooting advantage in the second half and finished with an 18-3 edge.
Hannah Miller was not credited with an official save but notched her 19th career shutout with the victory.
Nazareth will play a non-conference game at Cortland Tuesday night and return to Empire 8 play Saturday vs. Sage in Golden Flyer Stadium.
