PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Host St. John Fisher scored the game-tying goal with less than two minutes left in regulation Saturday to gain a 1-1 tie in an Empire 8 Conference men's soccer match with Nazareth at Growney Stadium.
Despite the deadlock in a foul-filled game, Nazareth extended its unbeaten streak to eight games (6-0-2). Nazareth is 10-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the Empire 8. St. John Fisher is 3-8-2 overall and 1-1-2 in conference games. Nazareth had to finish the game with just nine field players after freshmen
Noah Malta and
Diamond Weah were accessed first-half red cards. In addition,
Zein Mohamed was accessed a yellow card. Fisher played one player short after Ishaan Kashyap received two yellow cards in the first half, which equaled one red card. Three other Fisher players received yellow cards.
Despite the player shortage, Nazareth was able to take a 1-0 lead just 30 seconds into the second half. Senior
Dereck France worked the ball down the left wing and made a perfect cross in front of the goal where sophomore
Sam Smyth one-touched it into the goal for his fifth goal of the season.
With the shortage of players, Nazareth went on the defensive for much of the second half. Nazareth keeper
Brian Wilkin made four of his five saves in the second half and nearly had the shutout win until Fisher's Brennan Brown scored the equalizing goal with just 1:37 left. His low shot to the left-hand corner was just out of Wilkin's reach.
The teams then played a pair of 10-minute overtime periods in which neither team seriously threatened.
Nazareth finished with 11 shots to Fisher's 10. The Cardinals also had three corner kicks.
Nazareth is back on the road Tuesday to play a non-conference game at Geneseo at 7 p.m. The Golden Flyers then close out their regular-season schedule with a pair of Empire 8 home games -- Oct. 26 vs. Houghton at 1 p.m. and Nov. 2 vs. Elmira at 3 p.m.
