ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth staged a nice second-half field hockey rally Saturday, but a late goal by Hartwick ended any upset plans for the Golden Flyers, who fell to the Hawks, 3-2.
The loss evened Nazareth's overall record at 5-5 and dropped the Golden Flyers to 1-2 in Empire 8 Conference games. Hartwick improved to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the E8.
Trailing 2-0 after being outshot 26-0 in the first half, the Golden Flyers finally generated some scoring chances in the second half and were able to tie the score at 2-2 behind goals from
Jennifer Hilts and
Jessica Livesey.
Less than four minutes into the second half, Hilts delivered her eighth goal of the season by finishing a pass from Livesey, who was credited with her fourth assist. Less than nine minutes after that, Livesey tied the scored with an unassisted tally off a rebound. The Golden Flyers continued to apply some pressure and had a chance to take the lead with about 14 minutes left when a shot by Hilts was kicked away by a Hartwick defender.
Nazareth's upset hopes were eventually extinguished with 6:26 left when Hartwick got the game-winning goal from Perry Willett off a rebound. Nazareth was able to create a couple of penalty corner opportunities in the closing minutes, but was unable to score again.
Kimber Nourse was in goal for the Golden Flyers and finished with a season-high 21 saves.
Nazareth is back home Tuesday for a non-conference meeting with Wells at 7 p.m.
