ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Kristen Prohaska scored the tying goal with less than 12 minutes to play in regulation time Saturday as Nazareth battled Ithaca to a 1-1 tie in non-conference women's soccer action.
Nazareth is 3-2-1 overall and Ithaca, now a member of the Liberty League, is 5-0-1.
What once was a hotly contested Empire 8 Conference battle has now been relegated to a non-conference event now that Ithaca has moved over to the Liberty League. The teams met 14 times in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament between 2002 and 2016 and were declared E8 co-champions six times.
Saturday's game bore a resemblance to those bygone games even though Ithaca had a 17-7 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
With goals difficult to come by at time for the Golden Flyers in 2018, it appeared that Ithaca's goal by Gabriella Mihale in the 16th minute might make the difference.
That held up until the 79th minute as Nazareth picked up the offensive pressure. Freshman
Ashley Plane was able to break free along the right end line and was able to cross a pass in front toward Prohaska, who drilled a left-footed blast into the upper right-hand corner for her second goal of the season.
"We got a lot better today as a team," said Nazareth Coach
Gail Mann. "We didn't play a great first half, but I was pleased with the way we responded in the second half. Ithaca is always a great team, so getting a tie against them on the road is a good result."
Ithaca generated more chances in the two 10-minute overtime sessions with four shots to none for Nazareth. Junior goalie
Hannah Miller played well in goal by making 10 saves.
Nazareth opens its Empire 8 Conference schedule Wednesday at home against Utica under the lights at 7 p.m.
