ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting William Smith scored the first three goals of the game and then held off a late rally to defeat Nazareth in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday, 5-3.

The victory was the first of the season for the Herons, now 1-3 overall. Nazareth slipped to 2-3 overall.

William Smith's Sophie Craig scored three goals and Fallon Adair added a goal and an assist to pace the Herons. Freshman Mikaylee Whalen had a goal and an assist for the Golden Flyers.

Adair scored for the Herons less than five minutes into the first half and Craig added her first goal about seven minutes later. Teh lead swelled to 3-0 at 25:58 on a goal by Sierramarie Fitzgerald.

Nazareth finally got aon the board before halftime as junior Jennifer Hilts scored her third goal of the season.

In the second half, the first career goal for Emilee Rosenberg, off an assist from Whalen, trimmed the lead to 3-2. Craig answered, however, for William Smith less than two minutes later as she converted a pass from
Adair. She scored again three minutes later to complete the hat trick.

Whalen added her second goal of the season with less than seven minutes to play to make the final 5-3.

Freshman Amanda Chuttey played the first half in goal for the Golden Flyers and made five saves. Senior Kimber Nourse played the second half and had four saves.

William Smith had a 21-11 edge in shots and penalty corners were even at 6-6.

Nazareth opens its Empire 8 Conference schedule on the road Saturday at Houghton at 3:30 p.m.
