PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Host St. John Fisher used a four-goal flurry midway through the second half Wednesday to rally past Nazareth for an 11-8 women's lacrosse victory.
The Empire 8 Conference triumph boosted the Cardinals' record to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in E8 action. Nazareth is 7-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Trailing 6-5 at halftime, Nazareth got goals from
Haley DeVona and
Jamie Martin to kick off the second half to grab a 7-6 lead. Fisher answered with four straight goals to take control for a 10-7 lead with 13:30 to play. Martin scored again, her fifth goal of the game, with 8:34 to go, but that was as close as the Golden Flyers would get as Fisher clinched the win with an unassisted tally in the closing minute.
Freshman
Tori Blazey scored for Nazareth to give the Golden Flyers an early 1-0 lead. Fisher scored the next four goals for a 4-1 lead, before a goal by
Kellie Byrne interrupted the string with 13:41 left in the first half. Martin then scored three of her five goals for the Golden Flyers before the half ended to keep Nazareth within a goal at 6-5. That set the stage for the second half in which Fisher outscored Nazareth 5-3 to preserve the win.
Fisher, ranked 24th nationally, had advantages in shots (33-15), ground balls (21-12) and draw controls (12-9). Mallory Eymer scored three goals for the Cardinals and Claire Bollin added two goals and two assists. DeVona had three assists to go with her second-half goal.
Dylann Hogan and
Vicki Arena each had three ground balls and
Maeghan O'Brien had five draw controls.
Brianna Rizzari played all 60 minutes in goal and had 13 saves.
Nazareth returns to action Saturday for another Empire 8 Conference game at Alfred at 1 p.m.
