Rochester, NY – The Nazareth women's lacrosse team was held to just one second half goal Saturday, as visiting Stevens came out victorious, 11-7, in the conference-opener. After a high-scoring first half, in which Stevens led 8-6, the two teams combined for just four goals in the second.
With the loss, Nazareth drops to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in Empire 8 play, while Stevens moves to 5-2 and 1-0, respectively.
The Golden Flyers scored two quick goals in the first 1:24 of the game from
Jamie Martin and
Haley DeVona to take a 2-0 advantage.
Tori Blazey scored an unassisted goal near the midway point of the half for a 5-4 lead that was short-lived.
The Ducks evened the score at five apiece and later took advantage of four straight penalties by Nazareth which resulted in a string of three-straight extra-man goals. The pivotal stretch gave Stevens an 8-5 lead.
DeVona had three first half goals and was able to break the scoring drought with 3:40 left on a free position goal.
Bridget Collins scored her only goal of the game at the 26:23 mark which cut the Ducks lead to 9-7, but the Golden Flyers would not score again the rest of the game.
Brianna Rizzari kept Nazareth in the game with six second half saves, for a total of 11.
Stevens added two more goals in the half.
Nazareth returns to action Monday, hosting SUNY Cortland at 4 p.m.
