Softball Stays Hot, Extending Win Streak To Five

Updated Stats

Naples, FL – Nazareth won its opening contest Tuesday, 4-3 against Crown College, on a walk-off single from Marissa Tortora before throttling Curry College 9-1 in five innings on its third day of spring break action.

Nazareth has now won five straight games to improve to 5-1 on the year.  The Golden Flyers are off Wednesday, before returning to Fort Myers on Thursday to take on Swarthmore (1 p.m.) and Salem State (3 p.m.).

Game 1 – Nazareth 4, Crown 3

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom half of the sixth, Janelle Walters got the Golden Flyers off on the right foot with a double down the left field line.  Following a dropped line drive in center field, Kristen Simmons sped all the way to third, scoring Walters for the game-tying run.  That set the stage for Tortora as the very next batter, where she hit an infield single to score Simmons for the walk-off win.

Crown's first hit was home run from Lis King to right center field in the fourth inning to put the visitors up 1-0.

That led to a string of three more hits in a row to score one more run in the inning.  Pitcher Madison Zeis got out of the frame by striking out the final batter to leave the bases loaded.

The Golden Flyers were dangerous in the fifth, but ended the inning with the bases loaded.  Katherine Ruoff (3-for-3) began a string of singles, followed by MacKenzie Kapp (2-for-3).

Nazareth plated two runs in the sixth, stringing together four hits with two outs.

Zeis helped out her cause with a single to score Madison Joseph.  As the next batter, Kapp hustled out an infield single to bring the Golden Flyers within, 3-2, after Ruoff scored.

Zeiz got her first win on the mound (1-1), surrendering three runs on seven hits, while striking out six.

Delaney St. George was 2-for-3 in the win.

Game 2 – Nazareth 9, Curry 1 (5 innings)

In its second game of the day, Nazareth scored three runs in the first and five in the second to take control.

Stephanie Mongelli was 3-for-3 in the game with 2 RBI, including one in the first inning off a double.  Joseph and Marissa Drees had RBI singles to put the Golden Flyers on top 3-0.

Nazareth had seven hits in the second inning, including Walters driving in two RBI on a double down the left field line.

Simmons, Mongelli and Joseph also had RBI in the inning.

Nazareth's other run came in the fourth, on a sacrifice fly from Joseph (2-for-2) to score Tortora.

Kylie Smith improved to 2-0 on the hill, allowing just one run on five hits.  She struck out three in the game.
