Mongelli's Homer Helps Nazareth split Day 1 in Florida

Updated Stats

Fort Myers, FL – Senior Stephanie Mongelli corked a 3-run, inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning, helping Nazareth rally to defeat Blackburn 6-3 Sunday and earn a split day one of its spring break trip.  Nazareth was blanked 5-0 in its opening game against Wilmington (OH).

The Golden Flyers are now 1-1 on the season.

Game 1 – Wilmington (OH) 5, Nazareth 0

Neither side got on the scoreboard until a bloop single to the right scored Wilmington's first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth.

After just one hit over the first four innings, Nazareth had two singles from Madison Zeis and Jessica Mount in the fifth.  The Golden Flyers, however, left both runners stranded.  Nazareth finished with just three hits in the game.

The Quakers opened up the game in the sixth with four runs, on four hits and one error.  The error, which would have been the second out of the inning, gave the Quakers a 2-0 lead.  Later in the inning, a two-RBI double made it 5-0.

Zeis suffered the loss on the mound, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs, while striking out three.

Janelle Walters had her first-career hit with a single as the very first batter.

Game 2 – Nazareth 6, Blackburn 3

A slow start in the field for the Golden Flyers, allowed the Beavers to plate two runs in the first inning.

In the second, freshman Marissa Drees slapped an RBI single to score one.   MacKenzie Kapp also scored to tie the game at 2-2.

Trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning, Nazareth rallied to score four runs with two outs.  Walters, who was 3-for-5 in the game, singled and a catcher interference for Kristen Simmons put runners in scoring position.

Junior Marissa Tortora cashed in with a single to score one, before Mongelli belted the bases-clearing home run.

Freshman pitcher Gabriella Corasaniti had a stronghold on the lead after that, retiring the next six batters she faced to earn her first-career victory.  She allowed just five hits and one earned run, while striking out four.

Drees, Madison Joseph, Mongelli and Tortora were all 2-for-4 in the game as Nazareth finished the game with 11 hits.
