ROCHESTER, NY -- Nazareth closed out its season with a 4-2 win over Utica College on a cold and rainy Senior Day. The Golden Flyers improved to 9-10 on the season and an even 4-4 in the Empire 8 Conference just missing the Empire 8 Tournament. Utica fell to 6-11, 3-5 to end the 2018 season.
The Golden Flyers held off a late rally by the Pioneers and dominated the offensive end with a 30-16 advantage in shots. They also held a 13-6 advantage on penalty corners.
Natalie L'Hommedieu opened up the scoring for Nazareth at 23:17 into the first half off a
Jennifer Hilts assist. The Pioneers had a chance to tie up the score less than a minute later when they were awarded a penalty stroke at 23:39. However, Rylee Meelan's shot went wide of the goal. The Golden Flyers preserved the 1-0 lead at the half.
The Pioneers tied the game after scoring the first goal in the second half at 40:19 when Jessica Belt collected the rebound off Nazareth keeper
Kimber Nourse's goal-pads. The tie was short-lived as Nazareth quickly regained the lead after
Mikaylee Whalen scored off a crossing pass from
Alexandra Livesey just two minutes later at 41:47.
Senior
Sarah Dugas scored her second goal of the season to give Nazareth a 3-1 lead when she received a pass from Hilts who had collected her own rebound off a shot. Whalen scored her second goal of the game at 64:30 rocketing a shot in from the top of the goal circle to give the Golden Flyers a comfortable 4-1 lead.
Utica rallied in the final minutes scoring its second goal of the game at 69:05 to make the score 4-2 and had several shots in the waning seconds before running out of time.
Nourse finished the game with 13 saves while Utica's Carly Tebolt had 20 saves in the loss.
