Second Half Rally Pushes Brockport Over Men's Soccer, 2-1

Box

ROCHESTER, NY – Visiting Brockport scored two goals in the second half, including the game-winner in the 84th minute to earn a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Nazareth Saturday at the 14th annual Doug May Classic.

With the loss, Nazareth drops to 0-2 on the season, while Brockport improves to 2-0.

After a fairly even first half with Brockport holding a 7-6 edge in shots, the visitors established the better of play in the second frame to overcome a 1-0 deficit.

The Golden Eagles found the equalizer after a Brockport player was taken down in the box early in the half to earn a penalty kick.

Junior Quintin Volpe made good on the attempt, although Nazareth goalkeeper Brian Wilkin was able to get a hand on the shot to the right post.

The pressure continued throughout the half, with a shot from Volpe clanking off the post and out in the 54th minute.

With just six minutes remaining in the contest, Justin Mercer corralled a rebound in front of the net to push Brockport to its second win in as many days.

The Golden Flyers were doomed by failing to generate a shot in the second half of play.

Nazareth's Matt Gasbarre scored his first collegiate goal in the 29th minute.  Fellow freshman Dan Serpe threaded a pass through the midfield to Gasbarre, who took a touch and slotted a left-footed shot into the far post.

Wilkin made eight saves in net for the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth returns to action on Wednesday when it will travel to Cazenovia for a 4 pm contest.
