Nazareth falls to Stevens in UVC action

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- Nazareth dropped two more men's volleyball matches Saturday to a pair of nationally ranked foes at Stevens' Canavan Arena. Fifth-ranked Stevens disposed of the Golden Flyers in three tidy sets by scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-17. Then against second-ranked New Paltz, Nazareth lost by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-22.

Nazareth is now 18-12 overall and 3-5 in United Volleyball Conference competition. Stevens is 25-4 overall and New Paltz is 22-5.

Against the Ducks, Nazareth had a hitting percentage of just .080 (27-21-75), while Stevens hit .261 (35-17-69). Kane Wittorff had eight kills and Tom Keisling had seven. Jake Kemp had 26 assists.

Nazareth led 8-7 in the first set, then the Ducks scored five straight points to secure the lead for good at 12-8. The Ducks also pulled away with six straight points in the second set following a 7-7 tie. The Ducks then jumped to a 7-1 lead in the third set and were in control the rest of the way. David Lehman totaled 14 kills and Jacob Patterson had 25 assists.

Zachary Gillard had a match-high 13 kills against New Paltz and Kemp delivered 22 assists.

Gillard had six of his kills as Nazareth led 18-14 late in the first set, before New Paltz rallied. The score was later tied at 21-21, then the Hawks scored four of the last five points to clinch the set. New Paltz led for the bulk of the second set, but Nazareth closed to within 24-22 on a kill by Robert Sarneckis. New Paltz clinched the set on a kills by Anthony Bonilla. The third set was similar to the second as Nazareth trailed most of the way before drawing withn 24-22 on a kill by Tom Keisling. Setven Woessner then produced the match-clinching spike for the Hawks.

Nazareth is home Thursday for a non-conference match against Keuka at 7 p.m.
