CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Host Cortland, ranked 17th nationally in Division III, outscored Nazareth 5-1 in the third quarter Monday to break away from the Golden Flyers to take a 15-7 men's lacrosse victory in a non-conference game.

Junior midfielder Jacob Gray scored three goals, including two on extra man for the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 0-2. Cortland, with four goals from Thomas McNaney and 17 saves in goal from Joe Scalise, improved to 2-0. The Golden Flyers seek their first win Friday when they play Clarkson at the Syracuse Carrier Dome at 7 p.m.

The Red Dragons were in control most of the way as they scored the first two goals of the game on their way to a 4-1 lead after one quarter. McNaney and Andrew Gonzalez each scored twice in the first half as Cortland led 6-2. Gray had both Nazareth goals -- one in each quarter -- on extra-man passes from senior Joe Eiskant.

Cortland then broke the game open in the third quarter, taking advantage of six Nazareth turnovers as well as two penalties to score five straight goals to surge to an 11-2 advantage.

A crosscheck penalty to Nazareth sophomore long-stick Tommy McCormick carried over from the second to the third quarter and resulted in a Cortland man-up goal early in the third. Later in the period, another long-stick, freshman Owen Penoyer, was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct and Cortland cashed in with its second man-up goal of the quarter. The Red Dragons added three more goals before Gray scored unassisted for Nazareth with just :17 left in the period.

Nazareth came back to score four times in the fourth quarter as the Golden Flyers generated 18 of their 37 shots in the game. Senior Hunter Burdick scored twice and sophomore Anthony Basile and junior Paul Walter also delivered. Sophomore Jack Crowley and junior Chris Murphy picked up assists. Nazareth had other chances, but Scalise stood out by making seven of his saves in the final period.

Junior Seth DeLisle had his second straight strong game taking faceoffs as he won 15 of 22 draws and scooped up 10 of Nazareth's 26 ground balls. Junior Rick Kronenwett started in goal and made nine saves in the first half. Freshman Alex Winkler came on in the second half and had six saves.
