Nazareth rallies to top Fredonia, 13-10

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth used a nine-goal second-half scoring spree Thursday to rally past Fredonia for a 13-10 non-conference victory over the Blue Devils in women's lacrosse action.

The Golden Flyers improved to 5-3 with the come-from-behind win. Fredonia dropped to 1-7. Haley DeVona finished with four goals and Kate Rothrock contributed three goals and two assists. Audrey Yokopovich had five goals fro Fredonia.

Trailing 7-4 at halftime, then 8-4 early in the second half, Nazareth broke loose to score nine straight goals in a 23-minute stretch to gain the win. Senior Gabbie Charles scored three times during the scoring run, including the first goal on a free-position shot with 27:01 to play that triggered the rally.

Haley DeVona scored five minutes later, then Charles scored off a pass from Nicole DeVona to close the gap to 8-7. Nicole DeVona delivered the tying goal with 15:21 left, then Charles scored the go-ahead goal at 14:02 to give Nazareth the lead for good at 9-8.

Kate Rothrock added to the flurry at 11:41 and then contributed assists on a pair of goals by Haley DeVona that enabled Nazareth to increase its lead to 12-8. Rothrock then added a free-position goal with 4:14 to play as Nazareth's lead grew to 13-8. Fredonia scored twice in the closing minutes to make the final 13-10.

Nazareth got off to a slow start by falling behind 5-1 and later 7-4 by halftime.

Nazareth's second-half dominence was underscored by a 27-7 advantage in shots and a 15-4 advantage in ground balls. Nazareth also converted 6-of-11 free-position attempts overall, including three of six in the second half. Nazareth also forced 16 of Fredonia's 25 turnovers in the second half, with Nicole DeVona credited with seven caused turnovers.

Sophomore Brianna Rizzari played all 60 minutes in goal and was credited with eight saves.

Nazareth is idle this weekend, then returns to action Tuesday to play at Cortland at 4 p.m.
