ROCHESTER, NY – Host Nazareth notched eight first-half goals and hung on for a 13-10 victory Tuesday to hand previously unbeaten Rochester (2-1) its first loss of the season.
Kate Rothrock led the way with three goals and three assists for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth, winners of three straight, is now 3-2 on the season.
The Golden Flyers got off to a hot start, scoring the first five goals of the game over the course of 12 minutes. The DeVona sisters were on the beginning and end of the run with Nicole starting the scoring and Haley putting in the fifth goal at 18:19.
Following a goal from Yellowjackets, Nazareth went on another run with the next three goals to take an 8-1 advantage.
Nicole DeVona and
Gabbie Charles each scored on the man-up and Rothrock scored her second of the day with five left in the half.
It was 8-2 Nazareth at the break.
In the second half, Rochester was able to claw back into the game, scoring four unanswered goals to trim the lead to 12-9 with 6:28 to play.
Haley DeVona scored her third of the day to help take the air out of the Yellowjackets sails to give Nazareth its four-goal lead back at 13-9. She also had one assist in the win.
Rochester answered with a goal a minute later, however, the Nazareth defense stood tough the rest of the way to run down the clock.
Martin tallied two goals and two assists, while
Nicole DeVona ended the game with two goals.
Brianna Rizzari put together a strong performance in net with 13 saves.
Nazareth returns to action on Saturday, when it will travel to Hartwick for a 4 p.m. contest to start Empire 8 play.
