ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Nazareth defeated visiting Mount St. Mary 1-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game on Saturday afternoon to earn its second victory in two days. Junior
Laura Herman scored the only goal of the contest in the opening minutes of the first half. The weekend's victories marked the second time in three years that Nazareth opened the season with a pair of shutouts.
It was the first-ever meeting between Nazareth and Mount St. Mary. With the victory, the Golden Flyers improve to 2-0 overall while the Knights fall to 0-2 overall.
Herman's goal put Nazareth on the board 6:30 into the first half. Classmate
Erin Strollo set up the scoring opportunity with a perfectly-timed through-ball from near midfield to Herman, who collected the ball in stride. Herman converted the scoring chance by bending a shot into the top-right corner.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Strollo made a defensive save by knocking down a shot with senior Brayden Dobles out of the net. Mount St. Mary opened the period with more offensive pressure than earlier in the game with three shots in the first five minutes.
Nazareth finished with advantages in shots (17-9) and corner kicks (8-1). Dobles made six saves to earn the victory. With 22 minutes left in regulation, Dobles made a diving save to her right on a free kick from roughly 25 yards away to protect the Golden Flyers' one-goal lead. Mary Riley finished with six saves while taking the loss for the Knights
The Golden Flyers travel to Geneseo for a non-conference contest on Thursday, September 8th. The Golden Flyers and Knights are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
