ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth scored all three of its goals in the first half Tuesday against the University of Rochester and the Golden Flyers held on for a 3-1 women's soccer victory over the Yellowjackets at Fauver Stadium.

Nazareth improved to 5-2-2 overall, while Rochester remained winless at 0-4-4.

Jessica Byrnes, Julia Delgatti and Michaela Soules each scored for Nazareth in the first 25 minutes as the Golden Flyers struck quickly by unleashing 10 of their 17 shots in the first half.

Byrnes' goal, in the fifth minute of play, came after she settled a long pass from Sarah Conroy and chipped a shot over UR keeper Gwen Haffenden for her third tally of the season.

Just over four minutes later, Delgatti netted her fifth goal as she drove a shot past the charging Haffenden after accepting a back-healed pass from Byrnes, who was credited with the assist.

In the 26th minute, Soules gave Nazareth an insurmountable three-goal advantage as she scored her first goal of the season. Delgatti served a ball into the box that caused a collision between Soules and Haffenden. When the ball popped loose, Soules was able to recover and kick it into an open goal.

The Yellowjackets avoided the shutout with a goal by Jean Chakmakas, who headed in a corner kick by Megan Runyan in the 80th minute.

Both teams were successful in clearing potential goals off the endline. Nazareth's Erin Strollo cleared away a shot by UR's Pamela Chan with about 14 minutes left in the first half to keep Nazareth ahead 3-0. UR's Giuliana Vasile cleared two potential Nazareth goals off the goal line. A header by Jordyn Ruston was knocked away with less than four minutes left in the first half. Vasile acted again in the second half when a corner kick by Jaclyn Stryker was curving into the corner of the goal, but was kicked away.

Normally a defensive battle when Nazareth and UR meet in women's soccer, Tuesday's three-goal outburst is the most that Nazareth has ever scored against the Yellowjackets in 24 meetings. Nazareth has won the last two meetings and now stands at 7-13-4 in the overall series.

Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule with a home game Saturday against Utica at 3 p.m.
