ROCHESTER, NY – Visiting Fredonia converted three goals off set pieces to earn a 3-1 victory over Nazareth Wednesday night under the lights on the Artificial Turf. The Blue Devils converted two header goals off corner kicks and one more off a free kick.
Nazareth falls to 3-2 with the loss, while Fredonia improves to 3-1-1.
It was the visitors who struck first with Brandon Butts putting down a header from Ryan Keller directly of the corner for the opening goal.
Alessio DeMichele had Nazareth's best chance of the half when he blasted a left footed shot from 30 yards out, forcing the Fredonia goalkeeper to tip the ball over the net.
The score remained 1-0 at the break.
Goalkeeper
Brian Wilkin made two huge key saves in the second half to keep the score at 1-0. He made a diving save in the 54
th minute on a shot from 18-yards out.
Shortly after, Nazareth surrendered a penalty kick, which Wilkin pushed aside. It was Wilkin's second saved penalty kick this season.
Fredonia, however, pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 60
th minute as Butts used his height advantage once again to convert a corner kick.
Nazareth responded with a goal of its own less than two minutes later when
Dylan Toscano threaded a pass to
Ben Rodney, who placed a shot past the keeper.
The Blue Devils regained a two goal advantage on a free kick from 40 yards out that slipped past the Nazareth defense in the 74
th minute.
Wilkin finished the game with nine saves.
Nazareth begins a three game roadtrip on Saturday when it travels to Alfred for a 1 p.m. contest.
