Softball Rolls Past Alfred State

ALFRED, NY – Playing for the third consecutive day, Nazareth earned a sweep of host Alfred State Thursday in non-conference action.  The visitors cruised to 11-2 and 13-1 victories, both in five innings.

Nazareth gets back to .500 with the win at 15-15, while Alfred State falls to 4-21.

Game 1: Nazareth 11, Alfred State 2 (5 innings)

After recording two runs in the opening inning, Nazareth erupted for eight runs in the second.  The Golden Flyers notched four hits in the inning and benefited from two Pioneers errors.

Two of the first three batters in the inning were retired before Nazareth got things going. The big play of the inning came on a Maureen Rogers double down the left field line which cleared the bases.  Morgan Ross and Stephanie Mongelli had RBI singles in the inning.

Mongelli picked up another RBI in the fifth inning before Alfred State scored their only two runs in the bottom half.

Nicole White (6-8) pitched three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six batters to earn the win.  Madison Zeis pitched the final two innings, giving up two runs.  

Ross finished 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Rogers and Mongelli each notched two hits.

Game 2: Nazareth 13, Alfred State 1 (5 Innings)

The Nazareth bats were alive once again in game two, compiling 17 hits.  In the second inning, Ross tripled to score Ann Stull and Annika Guiliano.

The Golden Flyers notched a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings.  Rachel Mertens knocked in two of her own with single in the fourth.

Marissa Tortora (2-for-3), who led the way with three RBI in the game, delivered two of them in the fifth.  Nazareth tacked on six runs in all for the inning.

Mongelli, Mertens, and Ross all went 3-for-4 in the game. 

Mertens earned the win in the circle, pitching four innings and striking out four.  Danae Wetherbee closed in the final inning, allowing no hits.

Nazareth returns to action on Saturday when it will travel to Alfred University for a doubleheader.
