ROCHESTER, NY – Visiting Nazareth scored the final three goals of game, only to fall to East Avenue rival St. John Fisher 10-9 Wednesday night at Fisher's Growney Stadium.
Nazareth falls to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while No. 17 Fisher improves to 12-1 and 4-0, respectively.
The first half of play featured back and forth action. Trailing 3-1, Nazareth scored the next two goals at the hands of
Kate Rothrock and
Jamie Martin, the second coming at the 15:55 mark.
Later in the half,
Nicole DeVona notched two goals in a one minute span to give the Golden Flyers a 5-4 lead with under five minutes left in the half.
It was tied 5-5 at the break.
The Golden Flyers scored in the opening moments of the second half on an unassisted tally from
Haley DeVona.
Nazareth, however, went cold from the field, going over 18 minutes without finding the back of the net. That allowed the Cardinals to score the next five goals to open a 10-6 margin with 11:26 to play.
Jamie Martin ended the scoring drought for Nazareth with under 10 minutes remaining and
Carly Gates brought the visitors to within 10-8 late in the game.
With :30 seconds remaining, Rothrock found the net for the second time to close to within one. Fisher won the ensuing draw control to run out the clock.
Nicole DeVona finished with two goals and a team-high three draw controls.
Brianna Rizzari suffered the loss in net, making 10 saves.
Nazareth returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Stevens Institute at 12 p.m.
