Nazareth downs Elmira in 5; Zyburt Becomes All-Time Kills Leader

ELMIRA, NY – Senior Tim Zyburt had a team-high 17 kills en route to becoming the all-time leader in that category at Nazareth (1,311 kills), helping the eighth-ranked Golden Flyers win a pivotal five set match (29-27, 22-25, 25-22, 24-26, 15-8) over No. 9 Elmira College in UVC conference play Wednesday night.  Zyburt passes Tom Maving '08 who collected 1,306 kills during his career.

With the win, Nazareth moves to 20-6 overall and 3-2 in UVC play, while Elmira drops to 17-8 and 2-4, respectively.

In the fifth and deciding set Nazareth delivered without committing any errors on a .375 attack percentage. The visitors scored six of the first seven points of the set and cruised to a 15-8 victory.   

In the opening set, Nazareth built a lead of 19-12 but a stingy Soaring Eagles squad fought back to eventually tie the score at 24 all.  Nazareth dug its heels in, eventually taking the opening set 29-27.

After dropping the second set, Nazareth came back in the third set to hit .367.  The Golden Flyers notched 14 kills with just three errors in the set.

It appeared as if the No 8 team in the country was on its way to a four set win as it jumped out to a 20-14 lead, however, the soaring Eagles roared back to win 26-24. 

Zyburt hit .342 in the match.  Reigning Empire 8 Rookie of the Week Zachary Gillard put down 13 kills on 33 attempts, with just two errors (.333).

Grant Levermore notched 10 kills while Chris Mahan tallied eight (.615).  Kane Wittorff also added nine kills.

Jake Kemp dished out 48 assists for the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth hosts the Purple and Gold Tournament Friday and Saturday this weekend.  The Golden Flyers host Cal Lutheran at 4 p.m. on Friday and New Paltz at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
