Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Takes Two Behind Strong Pitching Performances

Naples, FL – Nazareth used strong pitching behind the arms of Rachel Mertens, Nicole White, and Madison Zeis en route to two victories to close out its Spring Break trip on Friday.  Mertens shut out Albion (Mich.) in game one, 2-0, mowing down six batters, while allowing just five hits. Zeis entered game two in the fifth inning in relief, allowing no runs and no hits to help Nazareth earn a come-from-behind, 4-3, victory.

The Golden Flyers are now 6-4 on the season.

Game 1: Nazareth 2, Albion 0

Nazareth had just three hits in the game, but made each one count.  Two of the hits came in the third inning.  Sarah Papponetti delivered an RBI double to score Zeis for the first run of the game.  Later in the inning, with Papponetti on third, Maureen Rogers reached on a fielder's choice as Papponetti beat out the throw to the plate.

Those were the only runs that the Golden Flyers would need behind Mertens.  She moves to 3-2 on the season.

Albion, however, threatened in the final inning.  With the go-ahead run at the plate and two outs, Mertens struck out the final batter of the game to seal the victory.

Rogers finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Game 2: Nazareth 4, Wisonsin Lutheran 3

White had a solid outing in the first four innings for Nazareth, allowing three runs (one earned), while striking out two.

Zeis entered the game in the fifth inning with Nazareth trailing 3-0 and delivered in her first-ever outing in the circle.

The strong pitching allowed Nazareth to stay in the game as it eventually broke through in the sixth inning for four runs.

The Golden Flyers managed bases loaded to start the inning after back-to-back singles from Rogers and Mertens.  Stephanie Mongelli reached on an error.

Annika Guiliano notched a sacrifice fly to score Rogers and bring Nazareth within 3-1.

Nazareth did the rest of its damage in the inning with two outs.  Zeis walked on a wild pitch which allowed Mertens to score.

Freshman Ann Stull delivered a shot in her at-bat, which was dropped by the left fielder, as Zeis and Mongelli cruised home to give Nazaareth a 4-3 lead.

After walking the first batter in the final inning, Zeis induced three consecutive pop ups to end the game.

Mongelli went 2-for-3 in the game.
