Updated statsHUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Fourth-ranked Nazareth lost for the second straight time in men's volleyball Friday as the Golden Flyers fell in three sets to unranked Juniata by scored of 25-21, 25-20, 25-23.
Nazareth also dropped a three-setter to No. 2 New Paltz last Sunday and now stand at 12-3 overall. Juniata evened its record at 5-5. The Golden Flyers play two more matches Saturday at the Juniata Tournament -- vs. Hunter at 11 a.m. and vs. Lasell at 1:30 p.m.
Against Juniata, senior
Tim Zyburt had 13 kills and senior
Coulton Every added nine kills and four blocks. senior
Grant Levermore had eight kills and sophomore setter
Jake Kemp had 37 assists.
Nazareth hit .276 as a team (39-15-87) compared to Juniata's .342 (40-14-76). The Golden Flyers also had 18 service error and failed to record an ace.
All three sets were close, but Juniata scored scored six of the final seven points to erase a 20-19 deficit to take the first set. A kill by Levermore drew Nazareth to within 22-21, then Juniata scored the final three points.
A kill by Zyburt brought Nazareth to within 21-20 in the second set, but the Eagles scored the final four points to take a commanding two sets to none lead.
The Golden Flyers led for a good portion of the third set before the Eagles rallied. A kill by Every gave Nazareth a 17-15 advantage before four straight Juniata points gave the Eagles the lead for good. Kemp and
Chris Mahan teamed up for a block for Nazareth's 23rd point to bring the Golden Flyers to within 24-23, but Juniata clinched the match on a service error by Nazareth's
Trevor Gooch.
