ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth field hockey team lost a closely matched contest to St. Lawrence 3-1 on Sunday in the Golden Flyers final home game of the season. The Saints held a slight 21-17 edge in shots for the game.
Nazareth drops to 3-16 overall with the loss and St. Lawrence moves to 5-8.
St. Lawrence took advantage of a congested front at the 15 minute mark. Lucy Stillman connected with Maggie Wraight for a tap in goal.
Five minutes later the Golden Flyers had an answer, as
Jennifer Hilts and
Kristina Back took advantage of a 2 versus 1 opportunity. Hilts drew the lone defender and threaded a pass to Back, who slotted a shot in behind the keeper to tie the score.
Stillman helped the Saints regain a one goal advantage at the 26:40 mark.
Nazareth nearly tied the score once again late in the half as Hilts ripped a shot from the point that was saved off the line by St. Lawrence defender Carly Dziekan.
The score was 2-1 at the break.
Back had another breakaway opportunity 15 minutes into the second half but Saints goalkeeper Julia Hudson came away with the save.
Shortly after, Nazareth repaid the would-be goal favor, as
Marisa Walck picked up a defensive save to keep the score at 2-1.
The Saints added an insurance goal with just over 10 minutes remaining as Maggie Wraight re-directed a shot from Dziekan.
Kimber Nourse made 12 saves in net.
