ResultsROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth closed out its home swimming and diving schedule in successful fashion Saturday as the Golden Flyers defeated visiting Utica convincingly in both the men's and women's meets. Nazareth won nine of the 14 events, including four by junior
Cameron Hess in the women's meet, to defeat the Pioneers, 142-96. The Golden Flyers improved to 5-2.
In the men's meet, Senior Dan Burke set a pair of school records and freshman Robert Draper had another as Nazareth outscored Utica. The Golden Flyers improved to 4-3. Both teams close out their dual-meet schedule Saturday at RIT.
In the women's meet, Hess was part of four winning events and junior
Kimberly Pedrotti won three others. Hess won the 200-meter butterfly (2:43.28), the 200-meter backstroke (2:38.07), the 200-meter IM (2:39.73) and led off the winning 200-meter free relay (2:02.40) that included juniors
Shannon O'Malley and
Lillian Masters and senior
Renee Stromski.
Pedrotti was first in the 800-meter freestyle (9:56.93) as well as both breaststroke events. She won the 100 in 1:19.24 and the 200 in 2:52.68. Other winners were O'Malley in the 400 freestyle (4:59.44) and Masters in the 100 backstroke (1:15.04).
Nazareth swept the top three places in the 200 fly, 200 back, 200 breast and 400 free races. In the 200 fly, O'Malley finished second behind Hess with a time of 2:48.63. Sophomore
Erika Holland was third in 2:52.98. In the 200 back, junior
Elizabeth Carro was second (2:42.05) and freshman
Shannon Johansen third (2:54.10). In the 200 breast, Holland was second (3:01.09) and senior
Nicole Charette was third (3:05.38). In the 400 free, freshman
Kelsey Jesaitis placed second (5:15.10) and sophomore
Sarah Izzo was third (5:20.15).
In the men's meet, Burke broke his own pool and school records in the 100-meter backstroke with a winning time of :58.87. Burke and sophomore Alex LaPoint later waged a close battle in the 200-meter IM with Burke touching out LaPoint to win the race in 2:13.39. LaPoint's time of 2:13.54 also broke the pool and school marks set by LaPoint earlier this season. Burke also finished first in the 200-meter backstroke (2:08.05), while LaPoint won the 50- and 100-meter freestyles in :25.77 and :56.00 respectively.
Draper's record came in the 800-meter freestyle as he posted a winning time of 8:41.44. He broke a school record that stood since 1997 and a pool record that was set in 2011.
Senior Sean Doyle also swam in three winning races. He won the 100-meter breaststroke (1:14.97) and the 400-meter freestyle (4:35.75) and was part of the winning 200-meter medley relay (1:53.77), which included sophomore Gannon Connors, freshman Robert Coatsworth and senior Rob Ramos. Coatsworth and Connors also were part of two other wins. Coatsworth won the 200-meter breaststroke (2:40.37) and Connors captured the 100-meter butterfly (1:02.92). Both swam on the winning 200-meter free relay (1:44.03) along with freshman Mike Walsh and sophomore Andrew Battaglia, who came in first in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:20.95.
Senior Aleksandr Efimov had a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 free (:25.91) and the 100 fly (1:06.84). Junior Matt Leverich was second in the 100 free (:56.45) and sophomore Ian Devaney was second in the 200 fly (2:26.68).
