Nazareth downs Emmanuel for first win, 2-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth gained its first women's soccer victory of the season Saturday as the Golden Flyers scored once in each half of a 2-1 win over Emmanuel of Massachusetts.

Nazareth imrpvoed to 1-0-1 overall, while the Saints dropped to 0-2. The Golden Flyers meet Allegheny Sunday at 2 p.m.

Nazareth had an array of quality scoring chances against the Saints. Senior Briana Vibbard and sophomore Laura Herman combined for 13 of the Golden Flyers' 27 shots. Emmanuel keeper Victoria LaRoche was able to keep the Golden Flyers off the scoreboard until the 36th minute, when freshman Mary LoCicero delivered her first career goal as she converted a crossing pass from fellow freshman Jessica Byrnes for a 1-0 advantage.

Prior to that Emmanuel actually had the best scoring chance when a Nazareth defensive lapse resulted in a shot for Kayla Generis that best Nazarteth keeper Allison Dobles before hitting squarely off the right goal post.

Vibbard accounted for Nazareth's second goal in the 65th minute, when a through pass resulted in a one-on-one with LaRoche. Vibbard was able to elude the charging netminder and wound up kicking the ball into an unattended goal for her first score of the season.

Just over five minutes later, Emmanuel got on the board when a shot by Savannah Lundwall from about 30 yards away went over the outstretched finger tips of Dobles, who finished with six saves.

Nazareth had a 27-12 edge in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.. LaRoche finished with 13 saves for the Saints, who play at RIT Sunday at 2.
