ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Empire 8 conference frontrunner Alfred swept host Nazareth in a softball doubleheader Tuesday at Flyer Field. The Saxons improved to 27-3 overall and 9-1 in conference play with 8-4 and 9-1 victories over the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 10-16 overall and 3-9 in the E8.

The Saxons banged out 27 hits in the two games, including three home runs, while limiting the Golden Flyers to six hits in each game.

Alfred led 3-0 in the first game with the help of a solo home run by Liz Thompson in the first inning. Nazareth battled back to take a 4-3 lead with four runs in the fourth inning. Stephanie Mongelli drove home the first run with a single, then Meghan Barry plated another with a sacrifice fly. Morgan Ross then followed with a two-run double to give the Golden Flyers a temporary lead.

Alfred regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth with Jasmine Pacini driving home both runs with a double. Thompson singled home another run in the sixth and two more runs came home in the seventh on a double by Sophia Chiavatti and an RBI grounder by Alyson Hampton.

Ross had two of the Golden Flyers' six hits. Nicole White started for Nazareth and had eight strikeouts, but also yielded 12 hits.

In the second game, Nazareth strung together three first-inning hits to take an early 1-0 lead. Ross doubled to left center to open the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Emily Graham. Maureen Rogers followed with a single to left to score Ross. Carly Pike followed with a double to right, but Rogers stopped at third and was stranded there.

After Alfred scratched out a run in the third to tie the score, the Saxons broke the game open with five runs in the fourth, aided by two-run homers by Haley Powers and Alison Wickwire. The game ended in the fifth inning after the Saxons scored three more times with Samantha Jauregui providing a two-run double.

Kerri Keeler was the winning pitcher for Alfred and improved to 9-0 overall. She walked one and struck out six. Danae Wetherbee took the loss for Nazareth after surrendering 10 hits and striking out four.
